Fall

Sound sculpture
Sound sculpture
The open air sound installation “Fall” is a sculpture that functions as an aeolian harp. It takes its title from the myth of Icarus. The two elements that are integral in the concept of this work are ones of arrogance and the inevitable downfall.
The climate crisis is the result of man's anthropocentric thinking and behaviour that feeds his belief that he can destroy, protect, or even admire nature as if he were something outside of it. The ‘Fall’ to which the work refers, has to do with the consequence of man’s arrogance, which is initially the realisation of his foolishness that he can exist outside and above nature, and then the inevitable power of nature which is capable of eliminating any mental construct that does not belong to Her. The fall is followed by reconciliation, where man realises his relationship with nature as an integral part of it.
Description: The outdoor sound installation "Fall" is a wooden structure with a metal frame, consisting of two rectangular surfaces 6m long by 3m high. As wind enters them, it is compressed, and exits with greater force passing through a series of strings. The strings are mounted on wooden rectangular boxes that amplifies their sound. Portices are created as air passes through the strings pulsating them and producing harmonic frequencies. The resulting soft sound has an eerie yet enchanting character.
The rectangular surfaces are arranged in such a way that the structure looks like a parallelepiped that has fallen from the sky and has partly sunk into the ground. Approaching the lower side of the rectangle, the horizontal arrangement of the wooden planks begins to be disturbed and gradually gives way to an anarchic structure that seems to follow the direction of the wind, as if carried away by it. This work consciously chooses not to make use of modern technology, to rely on its relationship with nature, posing the question to what extent we can create works without burdening the environment. The materials of the construction are re-used wood from construction sites, and the sound part of the installation works with wind power. With this installation we reflect on how man could find a balance by living consciously in nature as part of it and at the same time maintain the intelligence that allows him to invent and construct sophisticated tools.
Mood: The work "Fall" can be seen as a temple dedicated to the elements of nature, or even as a fragment of a civilisation that was defeated and returned to earth. Τhe power of the wind, turns the construction into a symbol of nature’s inescapable domination. The participation of wind in the work, apart from its main function, which is that of sound production, is to affect and transform the form of the construction, as it alters its rectangularity, a symbol of man's domination over nature, and forces it to follow the direction of its flow.
Landscape: “Fall” is designed to be an outdoors installation, and should be placed in a windy environment. The choice of the specific space at the entrance of the archaeological site of Acrocorinth is ideal as the narrative part of the sound sculpture as a fragment of a lost civilization, converses with the ruins of the acropolis of Acrocorinth.
